Justin Bieber's Three Funniest Saturday Night Live Moments

02/10/2013 at 08:05 AM EST

A massive midwinter snow left the northeast feeling just a little bit chilly – make that freezing – but it was nothing a heartwarming bout of Bieber Fever couldn't cure.

Just tell that to the fans who may have caught actual fevers roughing it out on the snowy streets of N.Y.C. in hopes of scoring tickets to the singer's Saturday Night Live hosting debut.

So did Justin Bieber bring the sizzle with his punchlines? Or was it, at best, a comedy cold front? In case you missed it, we're breaking down our favorite moments from this weekend's SNL.

1. Happy Valentine's Day ... and Black History Month?
Fresh off his split from Selena Gomez, Bieber still couldn't resist the love in the air during this special time of the year. "You know," he deadpanned, "Black History Month." Beat. "It's also Valentine's Day, so we're going to celebrate them both tonight."

In an opening monologue that might have made you shift nervously in your seat between laughs, the pop star mixed romance with blips of misguided African-American history. For starters, we didn't know Denzel Washington invented the peanut. But by the end of the monologue, he spotted his dream girl in the audience: Whoopi Goldberg.

2. Bieber Addresses Marijuana Controversy
Well, that's one way to handle a scandal: More than a month since photos surfaced of the squeaky-clean pop star smoking what appeared to be marijuana, his late-night gig was the perfect opportunity to make a statement about the incident – or at least make a joke.

While swinging by the The Miley Cyrus Show in character (or should we say out of character?) as a Miley fan boy alter-ego, he told Vanessa Bayer's Cyrus, "I also heard [Bieber] got busted for smoking weed and that he's really sorry about it. ... People make mistakes." That was after he referred to his real identity as "that douche," of course.

3. Yes, Another Early Valentine's Day Present
As if his appearance alone wasn't already enough for all of the Be-liebers who stayed up past their bedtime Saturday, the pop star sandwiched his show with yet another "sexy Valentine's Day message." Getting in the spirit of cupid's holiday, Bieber gave us a glimpse at his big plans, which include champagne he's not old enough to buy, suggestive dice and a less-desirable wingman named Taco. More importantly, he revealed his true Valentine after taking a naughty picture on his cell phone: "Check your email, Hillary Clinton."

Kelly Clarkson Already Has a Wedding Dress

Cover Story

02/09/2013 at 09:00 AM EST

Kelly Clarkson was about to experience a dream moment for any bride: trying on wedding dresses at Vera Wang's chiffon-and champagne-filled boutique in West Hollywood on Feb. 1.

"I was in the changing room, and I looked at my armpits, and I was like, 'Are you kidding me? I look like a cave woman!' " recounts the singer, relaxing a day later in jeans and a hoodie-covered Willie Nelson T-shirt in her adopted hometown of Nashville.

"And then I took my pants off, and I was like, 'Oh my God, my legs match!' My nails looked like a hot mess; my eyebrows looked like bushes. I was so not a girl. I started tearing up because I'm like, 'This is not me. I'm usually not this gross. I'm just so busy!'

"And then on top of that," Clarkson continues, "My friend got incredibly ill like in the movie Bridesmaids. She's like, 'We are totally not going to get asked back here.' "

So things didn't quite go as planned at Vera Wang, but by day's end, the bride-to-be did score the dress of her dreams. And a Grammy dress. And even a Jane Austen-inspired frock for an upcoming family portrait. (More on that in a bit.)

The wedding gown "is my personality in a dress," she says. "It's sweetly damaged. A little rock and roll. A little tattered. Nothing like a princess thing!"

Sean Lowe Blogs: Selma's 'Unwillingness to Compromise' Cost Her a Rose

The Bachelor

02/06/2013 at 08:30 AM EST

From left: Selma Alameri, Sean Lowe and Tierra LiCausi

Kevin Foley/ABC(3)

Sean Lowe is the star of season 17 of The Bachelor, which airs Mondays on ABC. The hunky Dallas businessman and entrepreneur will be blogging about his romantic journey for PEOPLE.com.

I was anxious to get to Canada and forget all about my discouraging week filming The Bachelor in Montana. It started off so promising with Lindsay and then quickly unraveled with the drama surrounding Tierra. Canada was my chance for a clean slate, and I was eager to start the week off on a great first date with Catherine.

I had just recently started to develop real feelings for Catherine. Our relationship was slower to develop than some of the others, but being with her felt natural. There was never a shortage of laughs, and she seemed like someone who truly fit the "best friend" description I had been searching for.

Between driving the ice bus, sledding down hills and drinking hot cocoa, our glacier date was perfect and so much fun. We turned up the romance that evening in our ice castle. We were able to bounce between serious moments and goofy moments so well. The night ended with kisses in the falling snow and I didn't want to say goodnight. The date helped put me back in a positive mental state. I felt hopeful again.

Icy Group Date

I want a girl who isn't afraid to step outside of her comfort zone and will seize the moment. That's why the "polar bear plunge" was the perfect group date. Nobody wants to jump in freezing cold water – I know I didn't! – but I was looking to see who would step up and make a memory that will last forever. It was absolutely freezing that day. The air temperature was right at 32 degrees and the wind was blowing. The canoe ride alone made me want to head back to the hotel where it was warm.

Some of the women were willing to jump in the water, others were more reluctant – and then there was Selma. It didn't bother me that she didn't want to participate. It bothered me that she didn't even consider it. Later she told me that when she says no, nothing can change her mind. As if that's a good thing! I thought you were supposed to compromise and talk things through in a marriage. That reasoning was a large part of why I didn't give Selma a rose that week.

Anyway, we all took the plunge, and almost everyone was glad they did. Except Tierra, of course. She was whisked away by medics and I honestly thought she was experiencing hypothermia. In hindsight, I'm not so sure ... but she played the part well.

Later that evening I was convinced of something: I knew Sarah was not the one for me and I needed to send her home. I could have waited for the rose ceremony, but I wanted to explain myself. I didn't think it was fair to make her wait two more days when I'd already made up my mind. Sending Sarah home was one of the hardest things I did during the season. It hurts me that she left feeling the way she did. She's such a beautiful, bright woman, and some man is going to love her forever. I just knew that man wasn't me.

Date with Des

My final date of the week was with Des. She and I had chemistry from the beginning. I was anxious to spend the day with her because she started to lose confidence in our relationship in Montana. She's another woman I always have fun with. Between repelling down a mountainside, having a picnic in a meadow and climbing a tree, I couldn't have imagined a better date.

That evening we had dinner in the coolest teepee, tucked away in a forest of the Canadian Rockies. She opened up to me about her childhood and how growing up with very little money has made her who she is today. It made perfect sense to me after hearing her story why Des sometimes hides her true feelings behind a smile. She probably had to put on a brave face during tough times as a kid. I found myself wanting to be the man that supports her and makes her feel safe. Des and I finished the evening kissing and making finger puppets on the walls of our teepee. Once again, she was at the top of my list.

Tough Goodbyes

The rose ceremony was tough because I had to say goodbye to two great girls. I never imagined sending Selma home. After our one-on-one date in Joshua Tree, I thought she might be the one. But in the end, her unwillingness to compromise told me that she probably wasn't the girl for me.

And Daniella was equally as hard to say goodbye to, because she was so much fun to be with. We just ran out of time. Our relationship started too late and my feelings for the remaining women were a little bit stronger.

I can tell you, though, I felt so much better about the future after leaving Canada than I did leaving Montana. I felt rejuvenated and hopeful, and the women seemed to have their focus back on love.

Thanks for watching!
Sean

Pink: 'Beautiful Has Never Been My Goal'

02/05/2013 at 09:00 AM EST

Pink is well aware of what people say about her appearance.

"A 'girl like me' is someone who doesn't rest on her looks, who has had people tell me from day one, 'You're never going to get magazine covers because you are not pretty enough.' I'm totally comfortable with that," the music star tells Redbook for its March issue, on newsstands Feb. 12.

"I know my strong points: I work hard, I have talent, I’m funny and I’m a good person."

The singer, 33, whose The Truth About Love is nominated for Best Pop Vocal album at this year's Grammys, elaborates on just how she feels about her looks in a very superficial industry.

"Beautiful has never been my goal," she says. "Joy is my goal – to feel healthy and strong and powerful and useful and engaged and intelligent and in love. It’s about joy. And there's such joy now."

Much of that joy comes from life with her husband, Carey Hart, and their daughter Willow, who turns 2 in June. One way that Pink feels beautiful? "When I'm sitting on a mat and my daughter runs to me with complete joy," she says.

The first night after delivering Willow, Pink adds, a nurse in the hospital spent time helping her adapt to life with a newborn. "We sat up and talked all night with my baby in my arms, and it was like my whole life made sense, for the first time, ever."

The 55th annual Grammys will air Sunday, Feb. 10, on CBS at 8p.m. ET/PT (7 p.m.CT)from the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Beyoncé's Halftime Performance Was Divalicious & Hooftastic

02/04/2013 at 08:40 AM EST

As soon as she first opened her mouth to do an almost-a cappella bit of "Love on Top," one thing was clear: Beyoncé was singing live.

And that was the case for the rest of her dynamic, divalicious Super Bowl halftime show.

Indeed, by the time Beyoncé slowed it down for the last number, "Halo," you could hear her running out of breath a bit from all the energetic, intricate choreography.

To make it further evident that this was not a repeat of her lip-synching the national anthem at the inauguration two weeks ago, she also punctuated her performance with many exhortations of the crowd for obvious effect.

Beyoncé's set was also marked by her much-rumored reunion with Destiny's Child, when Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams launched onto the stage for a medley of "Bootylicious" and "Independent Women Part 1."

The three then kicked into Beyonce's smash "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)," but Rowland and Williams could barely keep up with the hair-whipping B, who took over the song solo.

Another fave collaborator, husband Jay-Z, was missing when Beyoncé did "Crazy in Love," their 2003 No. 1 hit. But while it would have been great to see Blue Ivy's parents work the stage together, this was her moment and she hardly needed him.

The show was rounded out with a hooftastic rendition of "End of Time," during which the star appropriately seemed to be backed by a marching band, and a special effects-laden "Baby Boy" with multiple "Beyoncés."

Through it all, Beyoncé, looking like a dominatrix in her black leather getup, was a live singer in full command.

Busy Philipps Feels No Pressure to Bounce Back After Baby

Busy Philipps Body After Baby Pressure
David Livingston/Getty

Busy Philipps may be willing to dish out style advice to fellow expectant mamas — but she’s not about to start breaking out the postpartum weight loss lectures.

Currently pregnant with her second child, the Cougar Town star admits that while her celebrity status opens her up for public scrutiny, she’s not planning a big bounceback after baby.

“Like most things in this business, I think that you have to do what’s right for you and you can’t be too concerned about what some magazine is going to write about you,” Philipps, 33, tells HuffPost Celebrity.

“We’re in a business where a lot of people are blessed with pretty incredible bodies, that they work hard for or comes naturally, and not everybody has the same body.”

According to Philipps, staying healthy is priority during pregnancy and women “should be given a break” when it comes to packing on the extra pounds — especially by those dubious doctors!

“It’s interesting when people make comments about celebrities’ weight gain or lack of weight gain as if they’re a medical professional that’s treating that celebrity,” she notes. “Like, ‘This doctor does not treat Jessica Simpson, but thinks her weight is unhealthy.’ If you don’t treat her, then how do you know?”

After the arrival of daughter Birdie Leigh, now 4, the actress took her time regaining her post-baby bod — a journey, she says, lasted almost a year — preferring to instead instill a positive attitude (and approach) in her little girl.

“I wanted to be healthy for her and have a healthy body image so that she hopefully grows up to see that her self worth isn’t defined by how thin she is,” Philipps explains.

“Thrilled to be expecting another baby with husband Marc Silverstein, Philipps wasn’t sure if expanding their tight-knit trio was even in the cards for the couple. No one, however, was more ecstatic over the news than the big sister-to-be, whose wish is finally coming true.

“My daughter is very excited … it’s actually something that she has asked for for quite some time,” she says. “My husband and I were on the fence about whether or not we were going to add to our family, but now that we’re on our road, we’re really excited.”

Jenna Miscavige Hill Pens Revealing Scientology Book

What was it like to grow up inside Sea Org, the Church of Scientology's most elite body?

In her memoir Beyond Belief, excerpted exclusively below, Jenna Miscavige Hill describes her experiences at the Ranch, a San Jacinto, Calif., boarding school for children of Scientology execs. The niece of church head David Miscavige, she was raised away from her parents, then worked within Sea Org until leaving Scientology in 2005.

Now living near San Diego, married to Dallas Hill and mom to their children Archie, 3, and Winnie, 10 months, she's telling her story, she says, to increase awareness about Scientology: "I realize every day how lucky I am to have gotten out." (When asked to comment on the book's portrayal of its members, the church stated they had not read the book but that "any allegations of neglect are blatantly false.")

Jenna's parents, Ron and Blythe Miscavige, high-ranking members of Sea Org, sent both Jenna and her older brother Justin to the Ranch. There, at age 7, in accordance with Scientologists' belief that they are "Thetans," or immortal spirits, Jenna signed a billion-year contract.

I tried to write my name in my best cursive, the way I'd been learning. I had goose bumps. Just like that, I committed my soul to a billion years of servitude to the Church of Scientology.

Sea Org was run like the Navy: Members wore uniforms and managed all aspects of the church. Married members couldn't have kids; those who already did sent them to be raised communally.

A Sea Org member was required to be on duty for at least 14 hours a day, seven days a week, with a break for an hour of 'family time.' I was too young to understand that seeing your parents only one hour a day was highly unusual.

Drew Barrymore Wears Sweatpants She Finds on the Floor

Drew Barrymore Harper's BazaarDaniel Jackson for Harper’s BAZAAR

If you take away the fact that she’s a multi-talented movie star, producer, former CoverGirl and current cosmetics mogul who got married in Chanel, we really have a ton in common with Drew Barrymore.

For instance, we share the same life motto. “I live for makeup and I like wine. These are my truths!” she says in the March issue of Harper’s Bazaar of the decision to start Flower Cosmetics and Barrymore Wines while pregnant with daughter Olive.

More revelations that we’re totally on board with? “I wear sweatpants than I find on the floor” (on why she didn’t want to start a fashion line, like many celebs) and “It’s my crusade to help women feel good about themselves” — something that we at PEOPLE StyleWatch fully relate to.

It’s to fulfill that mission that she started Flower in the first place, and why she’s been so involved in everything from the formula to the packaging: “It’s about … a girl watching her mom at a vanity table,” she says. “I wanted warmth and acceptance and self-love.” And if she achieves that with Flower while wearing homemade tie-dye yoga pants (you’ve got to read it to believe it), well, we’ll love her even more.

To read more on Drew Barrymore’s next big steps, click here and pick up the biggest-ever March issue of Harper’s Bazaar, on stands Feb. 12.

Kendra Wilkinson Fondly Remembers Hugh Hefner's Late Secretary

A friend, a confidante, a shoulder to cry on. Someone who brought a welcome dose of levity when things got heavy.

Mary O'Connor was many things to Kendra Wilkinson.

Now, the former star of The Girls Next Door has written down her fond memories of Playboy founder Hugh Hefner's longtime secretary – who died last weekend – in a heartfelt post on her website.

"I'm devastated to hear about the passing of Mary O'Connor," she writes. "She was almost like a therapist because we could talk to her about anything. When I lived at the mansion I was very close with her. Over the years, she helped me through a lot and was always there for me."

Wilkinson, 27, was particularly touched when O'Connor invited her along to her favorite place far from Los Angeles – Branson, Mo. "I felt so special that she invited me to her getaway with her and it was so nice to see where she went away to," Wilkinson says.

One of Wilkinson's favorite memories shows O'Connor's fun-loving side. "She showed up at my bridal shower wearing a shower cap, while all of my friends were in risqué outfits," Wilkinson recalls. "She also held my baby shower for [now 3-year-old son] Lil' Hank which is something I will always be thankful for."

Wilkinson adds: "She was a wonderful person and I wouldn't be the person I am without her."

'Kid President' Has a Pep Talk for the World

01/30/2013 at 08:30 AM EST

"Kid President" Robbie Novak

Listen up! Kid President has some words of wisdom to share.

The young, self-proclaimed child chief of the United States doesn't identify himself by name in his video, apparently preferring that his message get all the attention.

"Life is not a game, people," says the tux-wearing "chief executive" – identified by Tennessee's Jackson Sun as 9-year-old Robbie Novak, a third-grader at East Chester Elementary School – says on a video posted on his Kid President website.

"Life isn't a cereal, either," he says in the video, which has already been viewed on YouTube 3 million times. "Well, [rolls eyes], it is a cereal. And if life is a game, aren't we all on the same team? I mean really, right? I'm on your team. Be on my team. This is life, people. You've got air coming through your nose. Heartbeat. That means it's time to do something!"

In between quoting Robert Frost and Journey, emotive little Robbie gives a special shout-out to a certain basketball legend who starred in a certain basketball film.

"In high school, what if [Michael Jordan] had quit if he didn't make the [basketball] team?" Kid President says. "He would have never made Space Jam. And I love Space Jam. What would be your Space Jam? What would you create that would make the world awesome? Nothin' if you keep sitting there."

Continuing his pep talk while dancing in the middle of a football field, he says, "This is your time, this is my time, this is our time. We can make every day better for each other. If we're all on the same team, let's start acting like it. We've got work to do. We were made to be awesome."

The Jackson Sun says Robbie's father, David Novak, works at Freed-Hardeman University’s FHU, and the videos are produced by Robbie's brother-in-law (his older sister's husband), Brad Montague, who runs the university’s social media.

"He is without the doubt the funniest kid I've ever met," Montague told the newspaper. "He’s intelligent and quick witted. He always has a smile and keeps it positive.'

Robbie's also got a few famous friends. He's posted Tweets and photos of him and Josh Groban, among others. His blog posts include photos accompanied by upbeat quotes that say things like, "Treat everybody like it's their birthday" and "Don't be in a party. Be a party."

Waiter Michael Garcia Refuses to Serve Man Who Insulted Boy with Down Syndrome

01/26/2013 at 09:00 AM EST

Waiter Michael Garcia made his regular customer Kim Castillo feel like family last week at the Houston restaurant Laurenzo's Prime Rib.

Castillo was eating there with her husband and their 5-year-old son Milo when several waiters came by their table to chat. Milo, who has Down syndrome, has slightly delayed speech. He showed off some new words, while talking about his recent birthday.

The chatter apparently displeased a nearby customer, who, according to NBC affiliate KPRC-TV, said, "Special needs children need to be special somewhere else."

Once Garcia heard the man's comment, "My personal feelings took over, and I told him, 'I'm not going to be able to serve you, Sir,' " he told the news channel. "[I said], 'How could you say that? How could you say that about a beautiful 5-year-old angel?' "

Castillo, "impressed" with Garcia's actions, says the waiter "put [his] job on the line … to stand up for somebody else."

Calling the man who insulted her son, "ignorant," Castillo adds, "I know Michael [stood up for Milo] from his heart, and from reacting to the situation. I don't think he stopped and thought about what he was doing."

Following the incident, Castillo wrote a blog post defending her son.

"Was he loud? Maybe a little in the moment, but honestly, the adults at our table were three times louder than he was," she said. "If he had been obnoxious, which like any other 5-year-old he can be, I wouldn't have thought twice about the family asking to move."

Meanwhile the restaurant's Facebook page has lit up with praise for Garcia and the supportive staff there.

"I am a Father of a special needs child and I applaud you and your employee, Michael Garcia, for standing up to intolerance and helping to educate people who fear the most precious of all children, those with special needs and disabilities," read one post.

He added, "Although I am a resident of California, I work for a [company] headquartered in Texas and am there on occasion for business. I will be sure to drop by and say hello and thank you when in town!"

Matt Damon Takes Over Jimmy Kimmel Live

01/25/2013 at 08:00 AM EST

Matt Damon (foreground) and Jimmy Kimmel

Matt Damon more than made up for his decade of being bumped from Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Declaring "I am in command of this ship," Damon not only hijacked the show Thursday night, but he brought along a little big-name help.

Ben Affleck, Jennifer Lopez, Nicole Kidman, Demi Moore, Amy Adams, Sally Field, Robert De Niro, Don Cheadle, John Krasinski and Oprah Winfrey all played a part.

Andy Garcia sat in as sidekick. Sheryl Crow led the band.

And where was Kimmel? Oh, he was there, all right: gagged and tied on the back of the set, as Damon took over.

"Just for starters," Damon told the ecstatic in-studio crowd, "let me ask you guys this: As an audience, is it weird to see a person with actual talent host this show?"

Admitting he'd been waiting a long time to do this, Damon – before turning his monologue over to Robin Williams – struck a personal note and said, "This is like the time I lost my virginity, except this is going to last way longer than one second."

Damon, tongue planted firmly in cheek for this all-star publicity stunt – earlier this month, Kimmel's show was moved into direct competition with CBS's David Letterman and NBC's Jay Leno – explained the basis for the Kimmel-Damon feud. The comic always wanted to be an actor, claimed Damon.

"I beat him out for every role he ever truly wanted," said the Bourne series star, now starring with Krasinski in Promised Land. "Jimmy has auditioned for every movie I've ever been in, every single one of them. How many did he get? None. So, he hates me."

Then there was the matter of Kimmel's ex, comedian Sarah Silverman, who in 2008 memorably sang a song about cheating with Matt Damon. (Kimmel retaliated at the time by saying he was "dating" Ben Affleck.) Silverman just happened to be Thursday night's guest.

"Is there anything you'd like to say to Jimmy?" Damon asked her, with Kimmel still held firmly in place, squirming. "He's a captive audience."

Replied Silverman: "No, I'm good."

Check out another hilarious moment with Affleck, who trick Damon into saying something nice about his captive:

Adrienne Maloof: Why I'm 'Casually Dating' Rod Stewart's Son

01/24/2013 at 08:00 AM EST

Adrienne Maloof and Sean Stewart

Splash News Online

Adrienne Maloof wants to make one thing clear about Sean Stewart: "We are not living together. He has his own place. He has a nice place."

Otherwise, she tells PEOPLE, what you've read is true: The 51-year-old, recently single star of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills is, in fact, enjoying a budding relationship with the 32-year-old son of Rod Stewart.

"This started as a business relationship and now were casually dating," she says, emphasizing, "It's casual, real casual."

Stewart, she says, is "a lot more mature than a lot of 60-year-olds at this time in his life," and he's long since left behind his partying ways.

"That was when he was a young kid," says Maloof. "He's been clean and sober for years."

Maloof, looking great and sounding carefree, with no sign of her recent, notes that her family "has always been in youth-oriented businesses" – they run a Las Vegas casino among other enterprises – so she can relate.

"I'm a modern business woman," she says. "I don't think of age."

And the fact that Stewart comes from a famous family is a plus. "He understands my world, the entertainment industry and being a public figure," she says.

So what does she think about Sean's father, the legendary Rod, who is still going strong at 68?

"His dad is lovely," she says, "A very nice person."

Melissa Rycroft Tricks Her Daughter at the Dinner Table

Melissa Rycroft Tricks Her Daughter at the Dinner Table
FameFlynet

She triumphed with her fancy footwork on the dance floor, but Melissa Rycroft may have finally met her match.

Although completely head over heels in love with daughter Ava Grace, 2 next month, the first-time mom admits her little girl has her beat.

“She pushes my buttons like nobody else on this earth can do,” Rycroft, 29, tells PEOPLE.

“She’s going through that phase right now, the ‘I’m sorry, Mommy, you didn’t want me to touch this? This right here I wasn’t supposed to touch?’ And she just gives you this look and I want to be so angry with her, but I can’t!”

Rycroft isn’t the only one being tested by the toddler; Dad Tye Strickland has been known to be on the receiving end of a few of Ava’s tricks, too.

“It’s Daddy’s day with her while Mommy goes and works and as I was leaving [Ava] pooped in the bathtub,” she says with a laugh. “It’s little things like that where I go, ‘That’s my girl! There you go, Tye!’”

At the end of the day, however, it’s Rycroft versus the father-daughter duo — at least when it comes to the dinner table.

“We don’t want to make her a vegetarian or just a meatatarian or just a hot dogatarian like most toddlers are,” she quips. “It doesn’t help in my house that my husband also eats like a 5-year-old, so it’s almost like I’m raising two kids [and] trying to get vegetables in both of them.”

Noting that “if it’s green [Ava's] not going to eat it,” a crafty Rycroft reveals she may have finally found the secret to her struggles.

“I’m finding new recipes online of how you can kind of hide vegetables in meals and so far they can’t tell that it’s there,” she shares. “There’s a nice stuffed chicken you can do [where] you can put some spinach and cheese right in there. They’ll never know it’s there!”

The Biggest Loser's Alison Sweeney Blogs: The Entire Family Needs Fight Childhood Obesity Together

01/22/2013 at 08:30 AM EST

Alison Sweeney hosts NBC's The Biggest Loser and is the award-winning star of Days of Our Lives, in addition to being an author, director, producer, wife and mom. Like she has for the past two seasons, Alison will blog each week about the latest episode of The Biggest Loser. Follow her on Twitter @Ali_Sweeney

Can you imagine if Bob Harper surprised you at dinner or if Dolvett Quince walked into your classroom? How would you react?

Watching the kids's reactions to Bob, Jillian and Dolvett surprising them was priceless.

Seeing how Biingo and his family have struggled financially breaks my heart but, like Bob, I was impressed by how they've managed and that they've been able to make healthier choices without spending more money. One thing that was reinforced this week was that the entire family needs to work together to combat childhood obesity. All the pressure can't be placed on the kids.

While the trainers were gone, I had a blast running with the contestants in the 5K. I always try to get a workout in each day and by doing the run at work, I was set for the day!

Plus, it was a gorgeous setting at the beach and anyone who follows my blogs on my website knows how much I love to work out outdoors.

While the competitor in me wanting to be at the front of the pack, there was something really special about staying with some of the contestants who were struggling and helping to keep them motivated.

At the end, I did have to pick up my pace to welcome the contestants across the finish line, and it was so fun to cheer them to the end.

Francelina jammed at the end and Jackson made sixth place despite his physical restrictions. As some of the contestants ran back to help Michael and Alex at the end, it was a reminder of what The Biggest Loser is all about – helping one another to get in shape and accomplish their goals.

By the time we got to the weigh-in, tensions were high.

Favorite moment of the week: Any moment with Jackson – when he was leading his team and especially at the weigh-in. He's just so funny and in that way, he reminds me of Dan Evans. Remember him?

Mandy Moore and Minka Kelly are ladies who brunch.

Joined by another female friend, the pair stepped out for brunch at BLD in West Hollywood on Saturday.

"They were very low-key and sat in the center of the restaurant, pretty much unnoticed by fellow diners," an onlooker tells PEOPLE.

Both of the famous friends were dressed down – Moore wore her hair in a bun and a gray V-neck T-shirt, while Minka sported a cozy gray sweater with her hair down in waves – and "didn't have a stitch of makeup on," the source adds.

While deep in conversation, Moore sipped on iced tea while the table shared granola, fruit, sandwiches and salads.

Jennifer Lawrence Trashes Her Oscar Rivals - for Laughs

Jason Sudeikis and Jennifer Lawrence

How to get the jump on your sister Oscar nominees? Host Saturday Night Live – and come out punching.

That was Jennifer Lawrence's modus operandi this weekend, with the Silver Linings Playbook's Best Actress contender taking good-natured swipes at her competition during her silver-tongued opening monologue on the NBC comedy show.

About Jessica Chastain, she said: "In Zero Dark Thirty you caught Bin Laden. So what? In Winter's Bone I caught a squirrel, and then ate it."

Naomi Watts: You were in The Impossible. You know what else is impossible? You beating me on Oscar night."

Quvenzhané Wallis, the 9-year-old nominee for Beasts of the Southern Wild: "You think you can beat me? [In best Gary Coleman voice] 'What you talkin' 'bout, Wallis?' Also, the Alphabet called. It wants its letters back."

And Emmanuelle Riva, from the French film Amour: "An 85-year-old French lady. Um, yeah, I think I can take you."

Also in line for ribbing by the rest of the cast on the show, which featured The Lumineers as the musical guests, were disgraced athlete Lance Armstrong (played by Jason Sudeikis), reputed hoax victim Manti Te'o (Bobby Moynahan), outspoken Golden Globes honoree Jodie Foster (Kate McKinnon) and the scowling, Globes party-pooper Tommy Lee Jones (Bill Hader).

Though not personally at the end of a satirical sharp stick, Lawrence did tip her hat to her Hunger Games persona Katniss Everdeen by participating in a mock Post-Hunger Games press conference.

The running gag was how could Katniss go for Peeta (played by Taran Killam) because he's so short. The gamers were also asked if they used performance-enhancing drugs.

To see if Lawrence does topple the other actresses ... the 85th annual Academy Awards will air live on Sunday, Feb. 24, on ABC from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
